This is a light-skinned grape, dominant in southern Italy around Sardinia and Corsica, but also widely grown in Southern France, especially in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
It goes by various names, among them Pigato in Liguria, Favorita in Piedmont and Rolle in Provence.
Hence it is regarded as a ‘quintessentially Mediterranean grape variety’, which manages to retain its acidity well even in relatively warm regions, and for afficionados in France, produces livelier wines than some of those made from fuller-bodied varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Marsanne ,or Viognier.
